This caterpillar was found inside a kayak in the boat compound at Castle Semple. The Elephant hawk-moth caterpillar grows to about 5cm.
Its name comes from the caterpillars resemblance to an elephant’s trunk. They may be seen during the summer feeding mainly on willowherbs while the moth feeds on nectar from plants such as honeysuckle. You can see they have two very large, black eyespots towards the head which can scare off predators.
