Deep red and black colouring of this damselfly makes it stand out among the others. Measuring 38mm makes it a medium size damselfly. Male has red ante-humerals, while female has yellow and may appear in three different colour variations depending on the amount of red and black. This species prefers freshwater habitats, although usually avoids fast-flowing streams and rivers.
