Horse chestnut is native to the Balkans and got introduced to Britain in the late 16th century. The tree flowers in May with white candle-like spikes. The nuts are fully developed by autumn and protected by spiky case. Roasted chestnuts are often consumed over winter season. The most famous use of chestnuts though, is the game of conkers.
