Great spotted woodpecker is common and widespread in Britain. Where to spot them – in woodlands, parks and large gardens. They have very distinctive black and white colouring with red patch on the back of the head (male only) or red crown (young birds). This woodpecker’s tongue is very long and sticky for extracting insects, such as ants, from their nest chambers. In winter they also feed on seeds, berries and nuts.
