Common British shrub with scented white flowers and dark purple berries, growing in woodlands and hedgerows. Leaves, fruit and flowers are poisonous, although during cooking the fruit and flowers lose their poisonous properties. Elder has various medicinal and culinary uses. The flowers attract insects and the berries provide an important source of food for thrushes and blackbirds.
