Common Blue Butterfly (Polyommatus icarus).

Posted in:

This butterfly is most active in sunshine and may be seen as early as middle of May. The male is blue and the female usually brown with orange markings. The wings of this species do not contain any blue pigment; the colour is created by light diffraction of its countless scales. Favourite plants to feed on include Bird’s-foot-trefoil, Fleabane, Thistles, Marjoram, Thyme and Clover.

Between June and September in South West Scotland.

Greenock Cut, Locherwood, Muirshiel
