Butterfly Survey Volunteer

Ideal if you are looking to learn more about butterflies or to enhance your C.V.

We carry out butterfly transects once a week near our Castle Semple, Muirshiel and Greenock Cut Visitor Centres. You don’t have to commit to every week you can join us as often or as little as you want. As a butterfly surveyor you will be helping to maintain our records and contribute to the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme.

Main tasks

You will walk a set route recording sighting of butterfly species.

Required skills, qualities & experience

You don’t need any previous experience of butterfly surveys as we will provide training on identification and methodology. You should be able to walk approx 4km over rough ground.

Where & When

Greenock Cut, Muirshiel and Castle Semple Visitor Centres.

Butterfly surveys can only be carried out when the weather is suitable, so times and dates will be arranged with the Ranger team on a weekly basis, they should take between 1.5 and 2 hours.

Training & support provided

We will provide induction training, butterfly identification and butterfly transect training.

Any other requirements

Suitable footwear for walking around trails.
