The rise of the Diatoms

Diatoms outcompete blue green algae due to weather

The turbulent weather (wet and windy) doesn’t suit blue-green algae, but is good news for Diatoms and motile green algae such as Eudorina. Castle Semple Loch has only a few cyanobacteria at the moment, while Diatoms that need silica from the soil to build their outer layer are increasing in numbers.  We only normally see large numbers of Diatoms such as Fragilaria, Synedra and Asterionella at spring and autumn.
