Saturday was the final Tag n Track Bird Ringing Demonstration of the year. There were some nice surprises in the net over the course of the day with three blackbirds ringed, two of which are possibly Scandinavian birds. There’s obviously been alot of movement with the birds at Muirshiel as we usually catch a dozen or so coal tits who already have rings but not one was trapped. In fact all the coal tits were new birds. Two new robins were caught and a third in the net had been ringed in May 2015 and recaught last winter. It’s always good to see the birds doing well. The highlight of the day though were the 4 long-tailed tits, including two birds who were ringed back in our March event. What a lovely way to finish the ringing events for the year.
We were also helped on the day by Sammy who is currently carrying out his volunteering for his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award and as you can see he got the chance to be very hands on with the birds along with one of our visitors. In total there were 581 visitors attend 11 events with a few hundred birds ringed. The bird ringing demonstrations will be back next year on Sun 11th February so watch this space!
