Update 27.06.17: water level is still at ‘Level 2’ although not as concentrated. Cyanobacteria is at 525/ml, 1250/ml is level 3.
There are a few blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) at Castle Semple Loch. Although the levels are not high they can increase rapidly should the weather warm up. The water is tested every two weeks to check algal levels. The dominant cyanobacteria in the loch is Anabaena circinalis and looks like a string of beads. The motile green algae, Pandorina morum, was also notable as it moved spinning in circles across the microscope slide.
Please refer to the following guidance on hygiene advice in times of high algae levels.
