A new species ringed at Muirshiel.

A weekend of bird ringing sees a new bird to the ringing tick sheet

It was a tale of two halves this weekend at Muirshiel.  Saturday was a blustery day with very little caught in the nets.  Sunday however was perfect ringing weather which saw a lot of the usual suspects such as Great, Blue, Coal and Long-tailed Tits as well as Siskins and Chaffinches.  The highlight of the weekend was the Blackcap male who decided to stand on the net then very helpfully fell into one of the pockets.  Blackcaps are members of the warbler family and we see an influx of them in the spring as they are one of the many birds which migrate from Africa. Some do overwinter in the UK as well.  This is the first time we have ringed one of these at Muirshiel as they don’t usually come down to the feeders.  What a cracker!
