A fistful of…Wrens and Goldcrests.

A quartet of some of the UK's smallest birds appear at the latest workshop

The Tag-n-Track team delivered another bird ringing workshop this week this time at a new site we hadn’t ringed at before.  We were invited to Hansel village to deliver a workshop to some of their residents. Hansel has some lovely grounds and we found a couple of ideal places to put up the nets and they did not disappoint.

One of the first birds in the net was a wee Wren.  The group were amazed by how small it was with this one weighing in at 10g.  We then had a run of Coal and Blue Tits before returning with a Goldcrest.  This wee bird is the UK’s smallest bird and weighed in at 5.5g! We were then amazed to get another two in the net.  You usually don’t catch Goldcrests as they are small enough to wiggle out the net but not today.  We had a fantastic time at Hansel and look forward to working with them again soon.
